Mt Doom and Mordor
The Tongariru Alpine Crossing held another charm for us: Parts of the landscape and Mt Tongariru itself served as Mordor and Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Leaving the barren vegetation behind, we crossed through areas strongly resembling images from the harsh rocky landscape of Mordor.
Mt Tongariru as active volcano quickly reminds one of Mt Doom (Amon Amarth).
It was really exciting crossing Mordor like Sam and Frodo, however we felt a lot less downcast.
