Our last post already gave it away: the river flowing next to the Rainbow Reach track was used in parts as River Anduin in Lord of the Rings.
In New Zealand called Waiau river, this river connects Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri and thus the only two major settlements in Fiordland. With the dense bush and forest on it's side River Waiau was used to portray the journey of the fellowship before they reached the Brown Lands.
If you don't want to rent a river boat, the second best options is to walk the Rainbow Reach track, which leads mostly alongside the river and grants some good views on it.
